The Chief Executive of Macau, Ho Iat Seng, issued a statement today (November 12) expressing deep condolences over the passing of Dr. Lui Che Woo, founder and chairman of Galaxy Entertainment Group. He also sent a letter to the family today, offering his sincere sympathies and wishing them strength during this difficult time.
Galaxy Entertainment and K. Wah International Holdings announced on Monday (November 11) that the founder and chairman of the group, Dr. Lui Che Woo, passed away last Thursday (November 7) at the age of 95.
Ho Iat Seng described Dr. Lui Che Woo as a highly respected entrepreneur and philanthropist, commending his significant contributions to the diversification of Macau’s economy over the years. He also highlighted the “Lui Che Woo Prize – Prize for World Civilisation,” established by Dr. Lui, as a reflection of his steadfast belief in the spirit of humanity and universal love.
The “Lui Che Woo Prize – Prize for World Civilisation” is an international award established by Dr. Lui Che Woo on September 24, 2015, to acknowledge individuals or organizations that have made outstanding contributions to the development of world civilization. The prize is divided into three categories: the Sustainability Prize, the Welfare Betterment Prize, and the Positive Energy Prize. Each laureate receives a cash reward of HKD 20 million. The inaugural “Lui Che Woo Prize – Sustainability Prize” was awarded to Yuan Longping, known as the “Father of Hybrid Rice,” in recognition of his contributions to high-yield hybrid rice technology. The late Yuan Longping, when receiving the prize in Hong Kong, had expressed that he would use the prize money for further research on hybrid rice.
