Executive director and co-chairman of casino operator SJM Holdings Angela Leong On Kei, a four-term legislator of the Macau legislature, has been nominated by the cultural and sports sector as a candidate in the upcoming Legislative Assembly election in September. This will be Leong’s debut in the indirect vote.
The businesswoman was first elected to the Legislative Assembly by direct vote in 2005, winning more than 9% of the total ballots cast. She was the fifth biggest winner in that year’s poll, beating other candidates like David Chow Kam Fai who also came from the gaming industry. She has since won re-election three times by direct vote in the following years.
This coming September, however, will see an end to Leong’s career as a directly elected lawmaker. The gaming boss will instead take part in the indirect vote for the first time as a candidate representing the cultural and sports sector. Another candidate nominated by the cultural and sports sector is veteran lawmaker Chan Chak Mo.
Commenting on her nomination, Leong said she would strive to attract more international cultural and sports events to Macau and facilitate the integration of Macau’s cultural and sports industries into regional development.
